Growing Up Third World is more than my memoir—it is the story of where I come from, the people who shaped me, and the journey that carried me from the tropical shores of Belize, Central America, to the United States of America, and a life filled with new opportunities, unexpected adventures, and the joy of becoming a writer.
I was born and raised in Belize, where I spent my childhood immersed in a culture rich with tradition, resilience, and community. At the age of seventeen, I moved to Houston, Texas, to join four of my older siblings, determined to pursue higher education and build a future. After earning my nursing degree from Lee College in Baytown, Texas, I spent twenty five rewarding years caring for others as a nurse.
The privilege of walking alongside people during some of the most significant moments of their lives taught me compassion, perseverance, and the power of every person's story.
When I retired from nursing, I finally answered the calling that had quietly followed me for years—writing. In addition to my memoir, I write romance novels, short stories, and poetry. Whether inspired by my Belizean roots, my travels, or the remarkable people I've encountered throughout my life, I hope my stories transport readers, stir emotions, and remind them of the resilience that lives within us all.
Adventure has always been part of my journey. As a triathlete and the first Belizean woman to become a PADI certified scuba divemaster, I have guided divers to the world famous Belize Blue Hole and along Belize's spectacular barrier reef. My love of the outdoors continues through golfing, kayaking, hiking, and exploring the beauty of mountains, rivers, and state parks. Traveling the world and experiencing different cultures continually inspire both my life and my writing.
Above all, I treasure my family. I am the proud mother of three daughters and grandmother of four, and they remain my greatest source of love, inspiration, and gratitude.
Although life has taken me far from Belize, its people, landscapes, and spirit are forever woven into who I am. They continue to inspire every page I write, reminding me that no matter where life leads us, our first home always lives within our hearts.
